Characters
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern: These two are basically one person, it is hard to tell them apart. They ask many questions and do not have much of a purpose.
The Players: They are just about the only few who know what is going on in the play. They keep Rosencrantz and Guildenstern grounded to a certain extent.Summary
- The play opens with Rosencrantz & Guildenstern playing the coin game which really just means flipping the coin and declaring that it is heads, every time.
- The players come along and make sexual jokes.
- Rosencrantz & Guildenstern make it to Elsinore. This is where it becomes clear that it is a play within a play.
- The two question Hamlet due to the conversation they had with Claudius.
- They find themselves on a boat with Hamlet on their way to England.
- The boat they are on is attacked by pirates.
- Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead.
Theme
Stoppard suggests that there may be an incomprehensible force shaping our lives making it impossible to control or understand them.
Important Quotes
"There must have been a moment, at the beginning, where we could have said -- no. But somehow we missed it.
Hunter:
ReplyDeleteWhat you have right now is a great start. However, several parts of it need to be fleshed out. Your characters and theme is mostly good, however, I would suggest definitely expanding your summary section. For example, you leave out the entire part with Hamlet swapping around the letter as well as the ending scene with the Player and the faked death, both of which I think are very important scenes.
Your important quotes section needs more too: remember that on the blog page, Ms. Holmes wants two quotes, and wants both of them explained as well-you seem to miss that last part. One possible explanation for this quote is "this is where R+G perhaps finally come to terms with the fact that there's no way out of their predicament and become resigned to their fate".
Keep up the good work!
Hunter, nice post! I like how you put Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as one character, it really highlights their interchangeability. I also think you picked a really good quote, you just may want to elaborate on why its important to the theme. You might want to add another quote or two. I also liked how you set out your summary with bullet points, but I think a bit more elaboration here would be good so when you go back to study from your blogs you don't forget anything! In your theme section you could also talk about the symbols used such as the script and the coins. In addition the language Stoppard has his characters use and how that affects the play as well as the tone. Make sure you add the setting too! I think you have a really good start, just needs some more details!
ReplyDeleteHunter,
ReplyDeleteAlthough I can tell you're on the right track, you definitely need to read over the requirements and add what's missing. As for the things you have, you need to make sure and explain the quote and the theme, not just write them down. I did like how you formatted your summary, but you need to add about three times that many bullet points in order to make it more complete. I definitely think this post will be fine once you take some time and read over the requirements.
